Notes on Laughter

My sister and I were leaving a movie theatre way back in the day. I heard a shriek and my name called and a high school friend popped into view and said, “I KNEW IT WAS YOU”. She had heard my laugh.
I have no great explanation for this. I am a soft-spoken person. I have worked hard over the years to speak up and allow my voice to be heard on a thousand different levels. And yet….. My laughter is a signature sound for me.
I love to laugh. I find more things delightful than not. I am invited into laughter by the simple magic that makes up the tween moments in life. But make no mistake… it is not polite laughter. It is rich, full and rather loud.
Very recently someone said that I had hit a place where all gloves were off with my laughter, and it was the first time I realized…. I actually have a less inhibited laugh. Floored me. I would have sworn before a judge that my laughter was already rather uninhibited. Guess not. I do have a laugh that I reserve for deeper trusting relationships. (Perhaps it is a matter of dosing someone and I wait until they’ve developed enough resistance to the laugh…..).
I giggle. I guffaw. I roll with laughter. I snort. I shout out laughter. I bark with the damn thing. But when I hit the end all of laughter…. It ricochets out like a machine gun. I become helpless to it.
How do you laugh? What makes you laugh the most?

Jillianne, I know several people with a signature laugh. It is wonderful and contagious. As for me I love to laugh but alas it sounds somewhat reserved. I would love to have a loud boystrous laugh that expresses intense joy…perhaps some day.

My son has an infectious laugh. I laugh with joy whenever I hear it. And like you, he only lets it out with certain people and only when he is experiencing great joy.
